Badlands National Park

On our road trip to Yellowstone, we made a few stops along the way. Our first stop was Badlands National Park in South Dakota. If you haven’t been, it is definitely worth the day trip and is an easy addition to your trip if you are traveling east or west along I-90.

Getting there!

Badlands National Park is south of I-90 between Interior and Wall, South Dakota. If you are driving in either direction through South Dakota, you will see about a thousand or more billboards for Wall Drug starting at the state lines. We didn’t stop in, but drove by for the obligatory picture on our continued journey west. We traveled through the park from east to west and stopped to take in the scenery at the many beautiful pull outs throughout the park.

Entering!

If you don’t have your annual National Park Pass, I highly recommend getting one. Entrances to all National Parks for the year for only $80. It was worth it for the 4 parks we visited on this trip alone. If you are over the age of 62 and a US citizen or permanent resident, go for the lifetime pass for $80. It is worth every penny.

Exploring the Badlands

What to See!

The Badlands are a giant canyon in the southwest corner of South Dakota. As you are driving along 240, there are rolling fields of wheat and sunflowers. Then suddenly the fields stop and there is this breath taking view of the canyon. Unfortunately, we only had a couple of hours to explore, but I would recommend stopping for a few hikes if you have the time. Here are some of the things we were able to see on the few short walks we did.

Hope you make it out to the Badlands! If you have already been, what was your favorite thing to see? Where to next? We headed to Devils Tower National Monument!
