Cycling Highlights of 2023

With an original goal of cycling 2,500 miles this year, I am really happy with my total of 2,700 miles. Those couple extra hundred miles brought me so much joy in 2023.

These are my top cycling highlights of 2023.

One Day Ride Across Michigan (ODRAM)

After years of watching others participate in ODRAM, I was finally able to make it happen for myself in 2023. In August, Jeff (my cycling buddy), Andrew, and I headed to Rothbury, Michigan for the start of this awesome event.

We spent the night at the Double JJ Resort. The next morning, we headed out for the long 150-mile ride to Bay City.

Andrew met us every 25 miles or so along the way to feed us and replenish our water. He was the best SAG (support and gear) Wagon driver you could ask for! With a 20 mph tailwind and mostly downhill riding, the miles just flew by.

Reaching Bay City State Park for the celebration picnic was such an accomplishment. It made me look forward to trying new and interesting rides in 2024.

Second Annual Michigan State Tailgate Ride

In 2022, we completed our first annual ride from my house to the Michigan State Campus for the homecoming game. In 2023, we decided it had to be done again. Plus it combines tailgating with cycling. Something that is easy to love.

Instead of waiting for the Homecoming game, we chose a game earlier in the season! With warmer weather and more time to tailgate, somehow 2023 was even better than 2022 despite the devastating loss to Washington. The MSU Football Team really had a bad year this year.

With 2023 coming to an end, we already started planning our 2024 MSU ride!

HUB Fest

After a year off, it was great to have HUB Fest back in Lenawee County. The Michigan League of Bicyclists puts on a lot of great rides every summer, but HUB Fest is one of my favorites. This one day ride, highlights the beautiful farmlands and well maintained roads of Lenawee County.

This year before the ride, I decided that it was going to be both fast and fun! At 62 miles, it was possible to push the tempo a little. Despite the heat, it was a blast cruising the back roads around Tecumseh, Adrian, and Blissfield.

If you are looking for a great one day ride in June, be sure to check out HUB Fest in 2024.

Exploring Empire, Glen Arbor and the Heritage Trail

We did a lot of camping and exploring in Northern Michigan this summer. Instead of riding routes that I was familiar with, I decided to explore routes on my STRAVA App. While camping at the Empire Township Campground, I created a ride around Glen Arbor that returned to downtown Empire via the Heritage Trail.

Northern Michigan is a beautiful place to cycle in the summer. While exploring new kite spots and bike routes in the van, it was awesome to finally see the second half of the Heritage Trail at the Sleeping Bear Dunes. I have run and cycled the first 10 miles many times, but it was my first time taking the trail all the way to the end.

Michigan has a pretty extensive rails-to-trails system. It is my goal to ride at least 20 of the trails by 2025!

So far I have ridden the following trails:

  1. Kal-Haven Trail
  2. Mike Levine Lakelands Trail
  3. Heritage Trail
  4. Falling Waters Trail
  5. Hart-Montague Rail Trail
  6. Downriver Linked Greenways
  7. Lakeshore Trail
  8. Fred Meijer Berry Junction Trail
  9. Little Traverse Wheel Way
  10. Leelanau Trail

Next summer, I hope to try the 275-mile Great Lake to Lake Trail system from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron.

Spending Time with Great Friends!

Cycling is great, but it is infinitely better with friends! When you are out enjoying a beautiful ride and it is also filled with laughs and great conversation there is nothing better.

With all of the adventure out there, the best cycling highlight is connecting with other awesome riders. It is what makes riding really special. The year 2023 would definitely not have been as awesome without great friends along for the ride.
