Devils Tower National Monument

After visiting the Badlands National Park on our Yellowstone road trip, the next stop was the Devils Tower National Monument in Spearfish, South Dakota. This giant rock sticking up out of the ground is a climber’s destination, but also just a neat place to see. We had to choose between Mount Rushmore and Devils Tower for this trip. We decided to visit Devils Tower because we thought it would be less busy and maybe a little less touristy.

Getting to Devils Tower

Spearfish is on the far west side of South Dakota. It is about an hour west of Rapid City and about 5 hours east of Yellowstone’s east entrance. If you are familiar with the motorcycle festival in Sturgis, South Dakota, Devils Tower is about 45 minutes from there. Driving along the back roads, you can see this large rock sticking out of the ground from a long way out.

What To See and Do

If you are interested in climbing be sure to bring your gear. You will have to register at the Ranger station before you head on up. If you are there for a casual visit like us, there are a few hikes around the base of the tower . We did the shortest loop around (1.3 miles). The short loop is paved and fairly flat. I would rate it as an easy hike.

On your way up the hill, you can stop and check out the prairie dogs living around the base. They are quite cute. For those who live in the Midwest, they look like a mini groundhog.

All in all, we were happy with our choice to visit Devils Tower National Monument over Mount Rushmore. Which do you think you would choose?
