Exploring Wilderness State Park

JoVanna had a long summer in the shop getting lots of work done. After eight weeks away from home, she was finally ready to do some exploring. The KiteBikeVan Familiy wanted to explore Wilderness State Park in the far northwest corner of Michigan’s lower peninsula.

Sturgeon Bay Beach

We started our adventure with a gorgeous day swimming and relaxing on Sturgeon Bay Beach. This dog friendly beach is long, relatively wide, and quiet. The warm, shallow, crystal clear water of Lake Michigan was a pleasure to bath in on a sunny summer afternoon.

Wilderness State Park Campground

After a great day at the beach, we stayed the night at the Wilderness State Park Campground. This campground is located directly on Lake Michigan with many camp sites adjacent to the beach. Although, the campground was busy it was a nice place to walk and swim. There are many hiking trails and at least a mile of beach. Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. The modern campsites have a 30 AMP hook up for pugging in. Rustic tent site are also available.

Wilderness State Park Beach

With a north facing beach the campground offered great sunrise and sunset views. This is also a great place to see the Mackinaw Bridge. As the sun rose, we were able to start our morning with a family adventure swimming and paddling from one end of the beach to the other. It was a perfect way to start the morning.

Downwinder

On our last morning in northern Michigan, Andrew finally got to do what he loves best. Starting at the far west end of the Peninsula, he was able to kite all the way back to the far east end of the campground. Covering almost 5 miles of shoreline, he was able to land on the far each end of the beach at the campground.
