Kal-Haven Bike Trail

With no planned races or cycling events in 2020, I spent many weekends exploring rails-to-trails in Southern Michigan. On a beautiful Saturday in August, I had the pleasure of riding the Kal-Haven Bike Trail from Kalamazoo to South Haven and back.

This 34-mile flat, unpaved trail is a delight from start to finish. I started at the Kal-Haven State Park Trailhead on 10th Street North in Kalamazoo. There is plenty of parking here and a large area to meet up for a group ride. The parking area is also equipped with port-a-potties, a waterpump, a bike repair station, a pavilion, and picnic tables.

This Saturday morning in August seemed like a typical summer weekend. There were many runners, walkers, and riders starting or finishing their workout when I arrived.

The first 5 miles of the trail were a little crowded, but after passing through the small town of Alamo, the trail was quiet until I reached Lacota. Lacota is about 8 miles west of South Haven. Here you begin to see more cyclist and runners starting out from the South Haven Trailhead.

The trail offically ends at the Kal-Haven Trail Sesquicentennial State Park in South Haven, but I would recommend riding through town to the shores of Lake Michigan. The sight of the sparkling blue water on the nearly endless horizon is worth the extra couple of miles.

Amenities on the Kal-Haven Bike Trail

What I found to be particularly great about the Kal-Haven Trail are its many amenities.

Every 4-6 miles along the trail, there was an outhouse available. (However, during the COVID Pandemic, the outhouses closest to Kalamazoo were closed.)

Waterpumps and fountains were also located every few miles along the trail, so you don’t have to worry about running out of water on a hot day.

At both trailheads and in Bloomingdale (the approximate half-way point), there are bike repair stations. Each is equipped with a tire pump and a variety of tools to help with unexpected repairs.

If you are looking for a great adventure or a lovely day on your bike, I would recommend checking out this trail. If you are are heading out in the winter for some fat-tire riding, watch out of snowmobiles and cross-country skiers.
