Why KiteBikeVan?

A few years ago, we decided to add more fun into our day-to-day lives. In our mid-30s, we didn’t want to wait until retirement to enjoy doing what we love. Andrew wanted to spend more time kiting and Jade wanted to spend more time training for and racing in triathlons.

While on a kiteboarding trip in La Ventana, Mexico, we witnessed a lot of travelers using custom vans to camp on the beach. They were always the first on the road to cycle and on the water to kite. Upon returning home, we decided to find a van of our own to remodel and use for kite and bike travel. We did not have a lot of experience with custom built van projects, but we love the challenge of learning new skills and adventure travel.

Who is this Blog for?

This blog began as a story documenting the initial construction of our custom built van named “JoVanna.” Since then, we have traveled to many places throughout the USA in search of great kite spots and bike routes, and we have learned a lot along the way. We continue to adapt and modify JoVanna to fit our needs. This blog is for adventurers like us. If you enjoy KITES, BIKES and VAN life, you are in the right place.

Andrew – Kite

As a Type 1 Diabetic (T1D) for over 25 years the dream of an adventure van fits well with our chaotic work schedule and varied interests in hiking, marathon running, triathlons, and kitesurfing

You can find me checking my blood sugar on the side of a mountain trail mid-hike or taking insulin on the beach with half a wetsuit on.

JoVanna was the opportunity for our family to get out there and make the most of it.

Jade – Bike

Most of the year, you can find me molding the minds of adolescents in the classroom or coaching on the track.

I am happiest when running in the woods or cycling on quiet country roads. When I am not seeking the next adventure or racing, I love reading, language learning, or playing the guitar.

Honey – Family

Our furry sidekick loves to paddle board on the water and hike in the woods. This old lady mostly enjoys sleeping on any soft, flat surface (including the bed of our van).

She is skepitcal about humans, but loves all furry creatures. Her shyness, however, can be easily overcome at the hint of a treat.
