Riding the Silver Comet Bike Trail

The Silver Comet Bike Trail starts in Atlanta and travels all the way to the Alabama State line. If you are in the Atlanta area, this is one of the many bike trails to traverse and explore. The Silver Comet Bike Trail is well maintained and easy to follow. It is also quite long for anyone looking to put on some miles.

The Silver Comet Bike Trail

The Silver Comet is a paved bike trail that begins in Smyrna, Georgia and travels 61.5 miles northeast to the Alabama boarder. At the boarder it connects to the Chief Ladiga Trail for another 33 miles for at total of 94.5 miles of beautiful, car free riding. Traveling the Silver Comet from end to end, there is 1841 feet of climbing. The trail has a many rolling hills but the largest climbs are closer to the Alabama boarder just east of Cedartown.

My Experience

In the Summer of 2021, JoVanna had a series of unfortunate mechanical issues. On a solo trip to Atlanta to visit my sister, the radiator fan broke and caused her to over heat. After dropping JoVanna at the shop, Des became my way of exploring Atlanta for the week. I started by heading west on the Silver Comet Trail. This trail was extremely easy to follow. There were sections along the highway that were hot and less enjoyable, but for the most part the trail was tree lined and traveled through the beautiful country side. The largest hill, caught be by surprise around mile 40 of my ride, climbing almost 500 ft. (We don’t have hills like that in southern Michigan). I was prepared for it on my return route.

After recovering in the pool for a couple of days, I returned to the trail this time traveling east from Hiram towards downtown Atlanta. This section of the trail was a lot busier with cyclist, runners, walkers, and rollerbladers. The closer you are to Atlanta, the busier the trail will be. There are many trailheads between Smyrna and the state line, so you are able to jump on and jump off where it is convenient for you.
